After spending over eight years as a professional therapist, I have understood that children suffering from various mental and physical disorders can get disruptive and even frustrating, to some extent. However, when my youngest son was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), I understood that as parents, we always wish the best for our children. And we always put their needs, problems, and wants above ours. I have been requested several times to mention parenting tips for children suffering from mental disorders. In this blog, you are going to learn top ways to manage your child’s behavior and deal with ADHD social skills & challenges.

- ACKNOWLEDGE AND DISCUSS YOUR CHILD’S BEHAVIOR WITH A PEDIATRICIAN.
Children who have ADHD often seem to have bottom-line symptoms of autism consulting a pediatrician together with a psychiatrist helps you understand what exactly your child is going through. Once you develop a deep understanding of your child’s behavior, symptoms, and disorders, it’s easier to deal with them. Having awareness about a specific issue helps you address it better and in an educated manner. Make sure that you observe your child’s behavior, notice all the recurring symptoms, and address them respectively to a doctor.
- TEACH YOUR CHILD HOW TO COPE RATHER THAN ENFORCING IT UPON HIM/HER.
I have mentioned this a lot of the times that with ADHD kids it’s essential to stay patient and keep an open mind. Parents fail to understand that when a person, especially a child, has ADHD, their cognitive process is at a halt. Your child might know what and how he’s supposed to act or behave. But he is bounded due to his mental capacity. A recent study shows that children who have ADHD face approximately a three-year delay in brain development. Instead of lecturing your child, you should try and understand what they want and what they may face trouble doing. And help them with it.
- STAY CALM – TO BOND BETTER WITH YOUR ADHD CHILD.
Since diagnosing ADHD can be overwhelming, it is crucial to ensure that you deal with it as calmly and supportively as you can. Children with ADHD are sensitive and prone to get emotionally damaged if not being taken care of properly. The technique I used to bond with my child and help him take control of his actions, feelings, and emotions is that I would play games with him. I would sit and help him achieve smaller and playful tasks such as completing puzzles, reading a story, or showing him how to fold his clothes. Even though Jason was very hyper and would react most of the time, after two weeks of performing the same activities, he finally learned how to do puzzles, fold his clothes, and even tie his laces. That’s how we made progress.
- DANCE, GIVE OUT COMPLIMENTS, AND TRUST THEIR DECISIONS.
Researchers, while developing ADHD test for children, conducted a survey and found out that by the age of 12, children receive more than 20,000 negative comments through their peers and teachers. So, it is of utmost importance that even when your child cannot perform daily tasks and or invests more than the required time on a specific activity, you praise them you ensure you value their decisions and things they do. Secondly, during the same research, it was put forward that children suffering from ADHD are neglected of exercises and physical activities. Psychiatrists suggest dancing, playground activities, and general exercises can help lift children’s moods, enhance their neurological process, and help them gain control over themselves.
Keeping all the tips, as mentioned above, would not only improve your child’s behavior but also help him develop better cognitive thinking and take control of their activities. Plus, practicing these tips can bring harmony to your family bring the lost peace back in the equation.
